THE FLOPPY DISK IS DEAD!
by Mike Martin
01/09/1998
| As computer hard disks and the software they
contain become larger and larger, the old 3½” floppy disk becomes less and less
relevant. However, most new PCs are still fitted with these now archaic
devices.
One or two suppliers are thankfully now
providing a more useful alternative - the Zip drive. These drives use
removable disks containing typically 100 megabytes of information. The speed
of storing and retrieving information is much faster than a conventional floppy
disk, and the cost is now below £100. The drives come with software utilities
for copying, formatting and for protecting the disk with a password etc.
For those who need to move large volumes of
data from PC to PC, the Zip disk is ideal for the purpose. |
